Week 3

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read each others' updates, known as tweets. I know all this because I looked up a Wiki called Wikipedia a free online encyclopedia and it helped me to understand what on earth these mad things are. Still in post holiday clear up mode so haven't made a start on anything yet!!

June 11 - Week one complete - a good introduction to the programme and the Lifelong Learning tutorial is very encouraging - reminds us of the many informal learning opportunities we have that we don't always give our attention to - although I don't think I'll start learning the uilleann pipes just yet!. I'm looking forward to Week 2 and some real action!
Week 2 completed - I think! I have now set up my very own blog (watch out world!) which you can peruse - now alI I need is to start finding some interesting things to blog about...Setting up the blog was relatively easy given the choice of template styles etc but the concept of making small talk into a cyber vacuum is not something I am totally comfortable with - my excuse it that is an age related issue. Time for a cuppa!

June 16 - Bloomsday and into Week 3 already - time does fly in cyberspace. I just realised that I hadn't really fulfilled all the Week 2 requirements as I had not mulled over which of the 71/2 Habits I find easiest and hardest. I think Habit 6, "Use technology to your advantage", does not come easy to me - does anyone remember trying to set the old style VCRs and ending up with the box, the VCR and the instruction leaflets in a big mess on the floor after an hour and no progress made? Well that was me! While I do embrace some technologies willingly there are others that I shy away from - after all how many other people do you know who don't have a microwave oven? That's a whole other story...
The habit I find the easiest is Habit 2 , "Accept responsibility for your own learning", unfortunately accepting the responsibility is a lot easier than making the time to do the learning - some better time management needed perhaps?
And we are all already ahead of ourselves having set up our wiki pages back in the mists of last week! So ever onward - I'll tackle Twitter later!
Week 3 - and tweeting!
I ventured into Twitter and did some tweeting as LornaOC99. It could be a useful tool for promoting library resources and events to followers - but does it have the reach as yet? - if a library has very few followers then the messages are a bit lost in the wilderness. I did find the trending topics area interesting - very up to date tweets on the ongoing situation in Iran. The immediacy of Twitter is one of its pluses. But it is not a medium I feel comfortable in at the moment.....perhaps it will grow on me.

I really do not have the hang of threads at all - I seem to get lost trying to follow or add to them!
June 26 and Week 4 not finished yet...
Am at the IIUG/EIUG conference so no time to finish Week 4 as yet, Unlike EdTech there is very little tweeting going on here - so are librarians really traditionalists at heart? Surely not! I'm getting lots of e-mails from Flickr with all of you as new contacts - great fun keeping up with the activities - keep 'em coming!
Week 4 - completed. Explored Flickr - can see it's potential for photo sharing for both work and personal use. The colour Pickr is fun.
Won't be making much use of it myself until and unless make the next technological move and purchase a digital camera.
Week 5 - Play week - sounds like fun - here goes!

Catching up...
We had a good discussion of the pros and cons of undertaking the 23 Things programme today - general consensus is that it is worthwhile. We've all learned a lot so far and it has made us - especially those of use who admit to being somewhat technologically challenged - more open to exploring new ways of working.
Ready to launch into Week 6 .... watch this space!

I have investigated RSS feeds and readers and set up a Google Reader account. See my blog for details.
Well - after a rather long absence I am back online with Week 7 completed.
I have investigated tagging/folksonomises and Technorati. I do find the delicious social bookmarking tool useful and have now migrated the Education and Research weblinks in our online subject guides to delicious. As the links are tagged it will be easier for anyone to find those on a specific topic rather than scrolling down through a long list. Of source delicious is only one of a huge range of social bookmarking sites see the Big List of Social Bookmarks - who knew there were so many!
As to Technorati - I found it useful - it would be a good starting point when exploring brand new topics. But would agree with Mark that I generally find good sites via "electronic word of mouth" - if I am on a good site I will investigate it links to other sites. Playing with Images can be a handy way to send a message and may have quick and effective marketing uses

Week 6. Technically a gimme week for me as I have RSS feeds set up coming from Library Blogs. I do not always read them as so many are american and hard to take. American Librarians, at least those who blog, seem to have a nice life jetsetting to conferences and are by nature tweetaholics

I stumbled upon a delicious plate of technorati verdi (with a nice tumblr of chianti). Its fark cry from stamping books.

Week 8. I had used google docs before for file sharing. Looked at Zoho too. It looks like a very handy tool. I think that these will be very much used in the future although I hear Microsoft is going to have an answer to the 'online office'

Week 9

I think youtube could be a very useful host for bitesize demos and library webcasts as its so well known. Ebooks and audio books are well on their way in our Library world.

I thought the 23 things overall was interesting although being a master of all is near impossible so choose your web 2.0 tools wisely ??

Week 4: My Flickr account is Smarmore1 and I have loaded one photograph of "Guess who?".
Week 3: done"ish" - my twitter name is Smarmore. So far it sounds as if it's for people with too much time on their hands and I'm not sure yet how valuable it would be for libraries (I guess,a few years ago we said the same about email)

29 June IIUG - There were several references to Tags at the conference. What would people think of using them for bib records - e.g. for theses we could populate it ourselves with keywords from the abstract. It might also be useful for the archives - a brief record on Millennium and then lots of tags.

Catch-up week 27th-July-2009

As we need to re-envigorate ourselves with the final push to complete 23things training. It was decided that the week from 27th Julty until 31th July, will be a "catch-up" week. This will allow us to complete the training up to Week 5 -Play week. So by the end of next week we should all be able to move on to week 6 RSS feeds and Newsreaders.

After this mornings review the Positives and Negative feedback is included below. Discussion on these issues or other observations on the training is welcome here (via the Threads section)

Week 1: Done. I am not sure about the learning contract (See below). Quite often you will not know what is involved in learning something new until you wade into it. And so you could spend as much time refining your learning contract as learning.

The last link for week 1 is pretty cool: lots of interesting articles under 'categories' on the rhs.

Week 2: Well I have gone ahead and set up a blog already as I am away next week. Its as dull as ditch water at the moment; but watch it grow! (this link only works in firefox).

Week 3: I have so much catching up to do. I just spent the last while looking at everybody elses work. I am stunned by the creativity!

Reading about wikis was interesting. I was already quite au fait with the concept by using wikipedia, but the variety of wikis is impressive. I do wonder if creating them is just duplicating sources of information already on websites in many cases.

Well, i am been playing around with twitter and at the moment i don't see it as a tool that is really doing anything that can not be done with other web 2.0 tools already. And as Mandy says people are giving alot away about themselves as well - (a librarian at the IIUG conference in Blanchardstown last week speculating on Irish 'lovemaking').

Week 4: I didn't do too much for this as I have been using flickr for a couple of years already, as a way of sharing photos with friends and family.

Week 5: I don't see much relevance to many of these image generators except for idling away part of the day.

The Latin motto generator was fun (for a nerd): "Scientia et verbum" or "Ex pulchritudine gaudium"

I took a look through the best 200 website list and I didn't recognise as many as I thought i would - but none really engaged me.

I have signed up to Rollyo but I haven't played with it yet...
Ok it looks like it could be a useful way of interrogating all your favourite websites in one fell swoop but then again Google does a similar type of job.

Week 6: RSS feeds. I came across this article which debates if RSS is going to be superseded by Twitter. I liked the explanation in 23 things about RSS feeds - particularly the way podcasts were shown work like an RSS feed - a 'oh yeah' moment for me - I had never thought of iTunes as an aggregator before.

The RSS and blog search tools did not impress me. They didn't return the kind of the focused results that I have become used to with Google. But I have started adding blogs to my RSS reader and I am being converted - it is a nice way of seeing new entries rather than going to the blogs themselves.

It looks like two ideas melded together: web-based bookmarks and websearch. The first is fine and useful if you move a lot from computer to computer. I am not sure I understand the second- isn't it just another way of finding the same pages you would get by using google? - just using different algorithms to determine page ranking.

Technorati
I looked around and added my blog to it, tried a few searches as well. But just on a short quick look around it will not replace the way I find sites I like - which is a kind of electronic word of mouth. A site I like recommends another, and I go take a look at it. For example I found this a while back by just that process and I have got lots of interesting podcasts on a whole range of subjects from it. The links on the right are excellent. So much of the hits I am getting on Technorati look like chaff in comparsion. That is not to say that with more time on my part of with further advances in technorati that it couldn't be a useful tool.

Week 8: ZoHo is really nice. But It is one of those tools whose depth would only be fully realised with hours of use.

Week 1

I've just completed week 1. The Lifelong Learning tutorial was a little basic in parts, but it raised some interesting points. I think we're all lifelong learners already without realising it or putting a name on it. The learning contract wouldn't suit everything, but I think it could be a very good way of approaching some new tasks or goals.

Week 2

Oops, I'm a little bit behind - starting week 2 in week 3. Ah well. Have a look at my blog - not much on it yet, but hopefully it will grow!

Week 3

I think I'm a little bit sleepy this afternoon. After reading and re-reading the instructions on the blog about adding a page to the wiki, Jamie kindly informed me that I had done that already in week 1. Think I need a holiday!

I've just signed up to twitter - tweet, tweet! I had heard that Stephen Fry is always tweeting, so I've decided to follow him for a while. I doubt I'll actually tweet much myself though.
Update: Started following Jamie on Twitter. It seems he has inadvertently started following Ell en DeGeneres and Paula Abdul...

Week 4

After a bit of a lull I'm working on 23Things again. Had a look at flickr today - there are some great photos on it. Most of my pesonal photos have myself are friends in them, so I don't think I'll be uploading any of them!
I can see how flickr would be used in the library though.

Week 5

The image generator is really quite good fun. I definitely can see this being used for marketing posters, on the blog, etc.

Some of the websites listed for Web 2.0 awards might be useful too.
There is an example on the DkIT 23 things blog of how to use Rollyo for searching for books. Maybe this is something we could explore some more?

Week 6

RSS feed week. I already have a Google account, so I went with their reader. It was a little confusing at first - a lot going on on the page - but got the hang of it eventually. The suggested RSS search tools were so-so.

Week 7

I set up a del.icio.us a while ago but hadn't done anything with it, so played around with that for a while. I think it's something I'll use when 23Things is over. I had, typically, forgotten my username and password so that delayed me a bit.

It's unlikely I'll officially add my blog to those listed by Technorati because I don't have anything of interest on it! I have tried to embrace blogs and Technorati but to me it all seems a little too messy and useless. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong ones?

Read some Library 2.0 articles, as suggested for this week. I can see the advantage in some Web 2.0 features but others I'm not so sure about.

Week 8

Online productivity tools this week. I had used Google Docs before when I had to work on a document with someone in Dublin when I was in Dundalk. The formatting wasn't great when you moved the document from Google Docs into Microsoft Word, but it really is a handy tool when two or more people are collaborating remotely. You can even seen the text as the other person types it.

Zoho looks great, especially for something that's free. I'll definitely be looking at this again in the future.

I had set up a LibraryThing account a couple of years ago. I like the look of it but I haven't catalogued any of my books... maybe some day when I have absolutely nothing to do. Or maybe not :)

Week 9

Like most others I search YouTube a good bit, but I'll keep an eye out for library related content from now on. Podcasts can also be really handy for listening to things you missed or want to hear again. I'm not too sure how useful a podcast would be to general library users though- I think webcasts/screencasts be more beneficial.

I found out that rolling self-repeating Flickr slideshows can be built in Flickr and displayed in blogger blogs (i.e. the blogs most of us built ourselves a wee while ago e.g. as demo'd on my wee blog http://bloggybloggy-bloggy.blogspot.com/ ) perfectly - however, wordpress blogs (i.e. and e.g.! our current DkIT Library Blog at http://dundalkinstitute.blog-city.com/ ) can't currently handle rolling self-repeating Flickr slideshows, wordpress blog can have a nice Flickr slideshow in it, but you have to click play button each time to run the show

Week 1:
We came, we saw, we kicked some ask - it was the week of nice new things and lots of hands on activity - lifelong learning, what web2.0 can do for your political career and we learned nice new things and shared nice new things and contributed nice new things about web2.0 and lifelong learning and lots more besides - web 2.0 is fun!

Week 2:
It was a hard blog or do I mean a tough wiki but on Thursday we got there in the end - 9 times out of 10 the network let me down but thats what online social networking and communities are all about aren't they i.e. having fun and learning through sharing and contributing online - and showing u how funked u r when u r offline

wikis and Browser wars!

I discovered that I could only accept an invitation as a friend to someones wiki here if I opened the invitation and accepted it in the IE browser - it wouldn't work for me in Mozilla Firefox, it just kept hanging.
However, other stuff for the wiki works in Mozilla Firefox that won't work if I try it in IE. So, moral of the story is if its not a network issue, if something isn't working in one browser, switch over to the other and try it there!

Week 4:
We are back live in week 4 land, a land called Flickr - photos and images time, lots to see and lots to do and lots to play!

We are learning alot through play, for example Flickr slideshows are neat, great for theme weeks, library marketing, exhibitions & events marketing.
Browser wars no so pertinent here - blog wars are however! WEEK 1 Seven deadly sins SORRY seven and a half habits in my case some of these cross over in the Lifelong learning experience. I have listened/watched the Southern Belle as she took me through the steps of what is considered to be Lifelong learning and can identify with what is being said, life, people, work, play, experiences all have a learning outcome for us. Good habits reading, listening, watching, etc., can be built on, Bad habits (have a few) can be changed with putting into play in the learning contract. In short looking forward to putting into practice all of my HABITS and shall swipe any obstacle that stands in my way that includes – human, paper, lack of brain participation, etc.,

WEEK 2

Have added my views on the Seven and a half habits - CORRECTION had added my views on the habits and it went somewhere but not onto the Blog, very annoyed as will have to start from scratch again on Tuesday Agh!!!!!!!!

Not loving FLIKER at the moment same problem as TWITTER cannot find anyone, feeling the overload of trying to remember logins & passwords, but will keep at it and with the Grace of God will have somewhat mastered it by the end of the day. By the way my name on Fliker is lormull.

WEEK 5
Enjoyed this week, had a lot of fun with the RSS feeds and also igoogle, so much so that I even put it onto my own laptop at home. Nothing nicer then the lazy touch of a finger to a keyboard with all the info in front of you. Time to move on to the next chapter in 23things.

Weeks 1 and 2 so far have been interesting. I wasn't mad about 7 1/2 habits - the best was the 1/2 habit. As for setting up a blog, my effort can be viewed at my blog.

Weeks 3 and 4 - Apologies for lumping weeks together like this, but I was off... it's very hard to get back into the swing of things, everybody has been working away feverishly and networking frantically it seems...

I managed to register myself on Twitter and Flickr. They are a bit hard to get around, I can't find anyone on them! However, Twitter could be of use to the library in terms of publicizing events. The problem would be to get followers and make sure there were regular updates as with the messages being so short attention spans might be as well. My name on both Twitter and Flickr is Viverous again, just to further confuse the issue (for myself)...

I have completed week 2 and created my blog.

I now have completed week 3 and have joined the Twitter site. I am reading all about Wiki's and Twitter. Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and share the workings of their day. Its exciting to be up to date with all the web info.

Accepted the invitation to join in 23things DkIT and watched the lifelong learning video. The idea of the contract is a good one but in reality life gets in the way of the best of schedules. That said, I suppose it is good to have some plan of where you are going even if you can't stick to it rigidly. I like the emphasis on how lifelong learning is experienced through all your activities. Still trying to find a picture I like so I will have to be an anonymous grey person for now.

Joined Twitter, I really can't see what all the excitement is about, I don't really need to know or want to know the minutiae of everyones existence. So much for privacy, people are freely giving away so much information about themselves and their habits and don't realise it.
